The sham of the sheikhs and the peace of the pharaohs

Jahangir Mohammed of the Ayaan Institute warns that Donald Trump’s “peace deal” is merely a pause in an ongoing catastrophe and that Palestinians will continue to die for decades to come.

It is heartening news to see a reduction in the daily extermination of the Palestinian people. Yet, it is merely a reduction, as Palestinians will continue to die for decades to come due to injuries, the effects of war, and an unliveable environment — that is, if Israel chooses not to resume its crimes against humanity.

Against this grim backdrop, the so-called “peace conference” in Sharm el-Sheikh — in the very land of the Pharaohs — was nothing less than a grotesque celebration of ego, wealth, and Western imperialism.

Muslim leaders, acting as obedient colonial subjects of the U.S. Empire, flocked to the stage in submission. Who said colonialism was dead? The event resembled a circus led by the former game show host turned president, Donald Trump.

If it weren’t so tragic, it might have been darkly comedic. The photo opportunities were straight out of a gaudy wedding, complete with awkward smiles and overblown theatrics. The massaging of egos, the self-congratulation, and the hollow talk of “peace” exposed the true nature of the gathering — a vanity show for the empire and its vassals.

Trump, a salesman addicted to wealth and power, played his role perfectly. For Palestinians, it was another humiliation. Watching their occupiers and enablers toast to “peace” must have felt like witnessing a mockery of their dead. There was no need for this performance.

Genuine ceasefire agreements or humanitarian truces are often signed quietly, without fanfare. But this was not about peace — it was about power, profit, and political theatre. The very nations that armed and funded Israel’s genocide were present to bask in the spotlight: the U.S., UK, Germany, Italy, and even Azerbaijan.

These are the same governments that supplied weapons, political cover, and resources for Israel’s genocide in Gaza.Throughout this spectacle — dubbed the “Peace Summit 2025” —there was not a single meaningful mention of the suffering endured by the Palestinian people. It was not about speaking truth to power; it was about worshipping it.

The empire demands obedience, and its subjects willingly offer it in exchange for wealth, contracts, and photo opportunities. The day began in the Knesset, where Trump boasted about how effectively US-supplied weapons had been used by Israel.

Then came his moment of tribute to Miriam Adelson, the billionaire Zionist donor whose £100 million campaign contributions helped return him to power.

Trump thanked her for her loyalty and assured her he had delivered—almost all of Palestine, save for the West Bank, was now under Israel’s control.

Benjamin Netanyahu responded in kind, calling Trump “the most devoted President” ever to serve Jewish supremacy.

He praised Trump for helping Israel “defeat the enemies of the empire”—meaning those who dare to resist occupation and apartheid. The spectacle in the Knesset was pure idol-worship. The applause that thundered through the chamber echoed the standing ovation Netanyahu once received in the U.S. Congress.

It is often hard to discern who truly rules the American empire—the occupant of the White House or the Prime Minister of Israel. In the end, the Palestinians were offered not justice but conditional survival—a “chance of life” if they agree to forget their rights. None of those rights, of course, have been restored.

Yesterday’s summit was not a peace conference; it was a grotesque pageant of submission. And the most tragic element of all was the participation of Muslim leaders who claim to follow Islam while standing on a stage that desecrated the memory of Palestinian martyrs.
