Canada: Murder investigation launched after 80 yr old’s death near mosque

An 80-year-old man, Ibrahim Bala, was found dead near the Oshawa Islamic Centre in Ontario on Thursday, sparking a murder investigation.

Discovered around 4:20 p.m. with evident signs of trauma, Bala was pronounced deceased at the scene despite emergency efforts.

Durham Regional Police have classified the incident as a homicide, the seventh in the region this year.

Bala, a resident of Oshawa since the 1970s, was a cherished figure at the mosque, known for his generosity and support for newcomers.

The Islamic Centre of Oshawa mourned his loss, describing him as a “dear community brother.”

Local councillor Derek Giberson shared that community members gathered at the mosque the following evening, recalling Bala’s kindness.

Police believe the attack occurred shortly after Bala left the mosque around 2:30 p.m., with the incident likely taking place before 2:40 p.m.

The cause of death remains undisclosed, though injuries were described as severe.

No suspects have been named, and authorities are urging anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area between 2:30 p.m. and 4:20 p.m. to come forward.

The investigation is exploring all possible motives, including the possibility of a hate crime, with the Durham Police Hate Crime Unit assisting.

Police have promised a sensitive and transparent process, working closely with mosque leaders and the community.

An increased police presence will remain in the area as the investigation continues.

The Oshawa Islamic Centre has called for calm, asking the public to avoid speculation while expressing full cooperation with the police.

Mayor Dan Carter offered condolences to Bala’s family and the community.

Prejudice, discrimination or hostility toward Muslims remains a growing concern in Canada, affecting its 1.8 million Muslims (5% of the population).

Anti-Muslim incidents have spiked significantly, with a 1,300% increase since October 2023, including verbal abuse, vandalism and physical attacks.

Muslim women, especially those wearing hijabs, are frequent targets.
