A man has been charged with the second-degree murder of his 80-year-old father near a mosque in the Canadian city of Oshawa, leaving the local Muslim community reeling from the loss.
Durham Regional Police were called to a home near McGrigor Street and Simcoe Street South on October 16 at around 4:20pm after reports of trouble in the area.
When officers arrived, they discovered a man suffering from serious trauma outside a residential property next to the Islamic Centre of Oshawa. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.
Police later identified the victim as Ibrahim Bala, an 80-year-old Oshawa resident. Officers believe he left the nearby mosque at around 2:30pm, and was killed within ten minutes of leaving.

At this stage, investigators have not released the cause of death, only describing Bala’s injuries as “traumatic”. The circumstances leading to the murder remain unclear, and police have not commented on a possible motive.
Constable Nick Gluckstein from Durham Regional Police described the case as deeply tragic. “It shouldn’t happen to anybody,” he said.
“No family should have to grieve a loved one. Everyone we’ve spoken to has said nothing but amazing things about this individual who was well-known, especially at the Islamic Centre.”

Community grieving
Five days after the killing, on October 21 at around 1:30pm, police arrested Sohaib Bala, 42, of Oshawa, at a home near Thornton Road North and Adelaide Avenue West.
He was taken into custody without incident and charged with second-degree murder. Police confirmed that Sohaib is the victim’s son. He was held for a bail hearing.
Durham Regional Police continue to investigate the events that took place before the murder and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
They have not said whether mental health played a role in the incident.
The killing has left the Oshawa Muslim community in deep shock. The Islamic Centre of Oshawa, where Bala regularly attended prayers, confirmed the news of his death in a statement released the following day.
“A very dear community brother lost his life around the premises of the masjid,” the statement read. “Please keep the family of our beloved brother in your duas (prayers).”

On Monday, after learning of the arrest, the mosque released a follow-up statement thanking the community for its support and reaffirming its commitment to help the grieving family. “We truly appreciate the outpouring of support and compassion,” the statement said.
“Mental health does not discriminate based on religion, ethnicity, age, or gender. We strongly advocate for families to access available mental health resources to help ensure that a tragedy of this nature never happens again.”
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) also commented on the case, describing Ibrahim Bala as a “prominent Muslim community member.”
The organisation expressed condolences to the family and the wider Oshawa congregation.
Community members have described Bala as a kind, soft-spoken man who was known for his dedication to the mosque.
Many said the tragedy has deeply shaken their sense of safety, particularly as it occurred near a place of worship.
Police have not said whether the killing took place inside or outside the mosque grounds, but confirmed it happened at a nearby residential property.
Ongoing investigation
As of now, investigators have released no further information regarding the cause of death, the events leading up to it, or any potential motive.
Durham Regional Police have urged anyone with details about the incident to contact them. They continue to treat the case as a homicide investigation.
The Islamic Centre of Oshawa said it will continue supporting the Bala family and the wider community during this time of grief.
“We ask Allah to grant our brother Jannah and bring comfort to his loved ones,” the mosque said.
