Labour to drop criticism of Israel, reports suggest

Jeremy Corbyn

It’s being reported that the Labour Party is going to drop demands for the immediate recognition of a Palestinian state along with any criticism of illegal Israeli settlements.

The Jewish Chronicle reports that a draft text to be put before the party’s national policy forum in Brighton next month reiterates support for a two-state solution in the region but avoids any direct criticism of Israel.

The policy reads: “In Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Labour is committed to a comprehensive peace based on a two-state solution: a secure Israel alongside a secure and viable state of Palestine.”

A senior Labour source told the JC: “The draft text seems to mark the return of what can be described as the classic Labour Zionist position. There is a commitment to a ‘secure’ Israel, which is crucial.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is a lifelong supporter of the Palestinian cause and has been a harsh critic of Israel. Yet since he became Labour leader he has toned down his criticism of Israel under pressure from Israel supporters within his own party.

But if the draft text is adopted by Labour Corbyn’s own supporters, many of whom are fierce anti Zionists, are likely to heavily criticise the change.
