Sexual predator jailed for targeting Muslim women over “hijab fetish”

Jailed: Emmanuel Ndegwe was arrested after being recognised on CCTV footage

A sex attacker targeted Muslims because he “had a fetish” for women wearing the hijab.

Scotland Yard launched a manhunt for Emmanuel Ndegwe, 25, after he followed Somali women and broke into their homes before attacking them.

In one attack he stalked a woman for a year and then knocked her to the ground and tried to rip off her clothes as she fought back in front of her horrified children. He also kicked and punched her.

The London Evening Standard revealed earlier this week the shocking details of the case, which was aired in a BBC documentary on Monday evening.

Ndegwe was jailed for six years in March after Detective Inspector Tracey Miller hunted him down in a “personal mission” after being horrified by the suffering of his victims.

She read one report about an attack and immediately linked it to a strikingly similar one she had read previously.

She told the Standard: “The victim descriptions were identical, the suspect descriptions were identical and so were the methods and my first feeling was it was the same guy. And when I plotted their addresses on the map, they were only hundreds of yards apart.

“With certain other offences, you get less emotion involved, because they have less victim impact. But equally it still feels you’ve been out hunting and found your target and now he’s in custody, so you get a real sense of achievement and satisfaction. You take it as a personal mission.

“From my perspective, it felt he had ‘a thing’ about women wearing traditional Islamic clothing. I strongly suspect that he had a fetish. We found a lot of pornography on his phone and quite a lot of that was Somali women,” his browsing history showed that he had visited porn sites that were similar to the videos hd xxx website but the videos on the sites he had visited contained mainly Somali women just like the pornography pictures and videos he had saved on his phone, with this evidence it’s clear he has a preferred type for his victims.

She also revealed that without CCTV she would not have been able to track down the predator in just 18 days.

After one woman came forward police traced Ndegwe’s movements on cameras near the scene of the attack on her, watching him go into a Ladbrokes betting shop.

They got a close-up of his face and circulated it to all betting shops within a close radius, and one recognised him.

Ndegwe “shoulder surfed” his victims, following them to their front door and slipping in behind before violently trying to force them into submission.

In one attack a woman’s children stood by screaming while in another he forced himself on a carer in front of the 89-year-old woman she was pushing in a wheelchair.

DI Miller said the victims “were utterly terrified and in utter, utter fear. One didn’t know if he wanted to rape her or kill her. And another lady he stalked for over a year.

“For me it was probably one of my best investigations, one I’m most proud of in terms of the impact, crime preventions and reassuring his victims he’s now in prison.”

Ndegwe pleaded guilty to two counts of trespass with intent to commit a sexual act and one count of stalking.

The counts related to two victims, but police believe there could be more. At least one other woman has come forward but there is currently not enough evidence to charge him. Police are calling for any other victims to call them on the 101 line.

The Met documentary on BBC One also revealed it cost Scotland Yard £6.2million to police Notting Hill Carnival. It reveals 13,000 officers work over the weekend attended by 1.5 million party-goers.

Residents tell of a “nightmare” in which people urinate, vomit and commit crime in the streets, including stabbings.

Sheila Robertson, who has lived there since the 1960s, tells the programme: “The main thing is the volume [of the music] and the fact no one seems to take any notice of us.

“A little old lady in a housing association, dying of terminal cancer, she came out and begged them to be quiet, and they said ‘f*** off, we do what we like’.

“And that’s how we feel about carnival now. It does nothing for residents. And it’s not about race – the white trash is as trashy as you ever, ever set eyes on.”
