Your Party plunged into more chaos as Muslim MP Adnan Hussain quits

A fresh scandal has erupted in the chaotic Your Party after the independent Muslim MP Adnan Hussain announced he is quitting the party’s “steering group” in a bombshell statement bemoaning a “toxic” environment, factionalism, and “veiled prejudice” against Muslim men.

In the statement posted on X on Friday, Hussain, the member of Parliament for Blackburn, explained the announcement came after much internal reflection.

“Over the last few months I have been in the process of reflecting on my involvement in the steering process of Your Party and on the direction in which the project has developed. When I agreed to take part, I did so because I believed in the vision of a genuinely broad church: a pluralistic, inclusive political space capable of representing the people who have long been left behind by the mainstream parties.

“I believed in a movement that welcomed diversity of background and thought: including working-class communities, like my own constituency, people of faith, and those who may be socially conservative yet economically left-leaning, while holding firm to a commitment to equality, justice, and anti-racism.

“Regrettably, the reality I encountered has been far from this vision. The culture surrounding the party has become dominated by persistent infighting, factional competition, and a struggle for power, position and influence rather than a shared commitment to the common good. Instead of openness, cooperation and outward focus, the environment has too often felt toxic, exclusionary and deeply disheartening.”

Hussain also made some alarming claims of “veiled prejudice” against Muslim men within the movement, alluding to possible Islamophobic attitudes among senior stakeholders.

“I have also been deeply troubled by the way certain figures within the steering process, particularly Muslim men, have been spoken about and treated. At times, the rhetoric used has been disturbingly similar to the very political forces the left claims to oppose.

“I witnessed insinuations about capability, dismissive attitudes and language that carried, at the very least, veiled prejudice. This was especially painful given that these individuals, amongst them myself, achieved something remarkable: winning seats, against all odds, in long-established Labour strongholds through sheer grassroots hard work, community credibility and determination, without party machinery or institutional support.”

The shock update comes amid other scandal involving the handling of membership fees and donations and accusations of an internal power struggle between co-founders Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana.

Sultana, a former Labour MP and staunch LGBT+ activist, faced a backlash over controversial statements she made against “socially conservative” people, stating in September that there is “no room for socially conservative views” in the new left-wing, socialist political party.

The comments were seen by many as an attack on conservative Muslims who may be looking to sign up to the Your Party project, specifically Adnan Hussain himself, a religious Muslim who has expressed conservative views on transgenderism.

Around early September, Hussain, commented on X that “women’s rights and safe spaces should not be encroached upon” and suggested that “safe third spaces should be an alternative option” for transgender people. He also stated that “trans women are not biologically women, hence trans women.”

In response to Sultana’s comments on socially conservative members, Adnan later hit back, slamming Sultana in a now deleted X post.

“People who won on a Labour ticket can threaten to push me out all they like. I took on the Labour Party machinery and won. They probably couldn’t even win a by-election in their constituency with their juvenile student politics. Sit down.”

This chaotic new development has plunged the party into a fresh crisis, with questions over whether British Muslims, who have abandoned Labour in droves over their immoral stance on Gaza, can get behind such a scandal riddled project.

The party, which has yet to hold its founding conference, is already dogged with a string of negative headlines largely centred around an already existing financial dispute.

On Thursday, the Independent Alliance of MPs, which includes Corbyn, Hussain, Shockat Adam, Ayoub Khan, and Iqbal Mohamed, said the Your Party was still attempting to recover money donated by supporters when Sultana promoted a new membership portal that was later disowned as an “unauthorised email.”

They said a “small portion” of the funds had been transferred to the official Your Party, but added this was “insufficient” and demanded “the immediate transfer of all the money that was donated by supporters to get a new party off the ground.”
