It’s being reported that Tyler Robinson, 22, who was arrested yesterday as the prime suspect in the fatal shooting of Islamophobic activist Charlie Kirk, had radical far-left views.
The exact motive for the shooting remains under active investigation by the FBI and local authorities, and no official confirmation has been released.
However, preliminary evidence and statements from officials, family and Robinson’s online activity point to a politically-motivated attack driven by anti-conservative and anti-fascist ideology.
Family members and officials, including Utah Governor Spencer Cox, stated that Robinson had become “more politically active” in recent months, shifting toward left-wing activism and expressing intense anti-conservative views.
This included rejecting the values he was raised with, as noted during a recent family dinner. Cox described Robinson as having been “radicalised in a fairly short amount of time,” potentially influenced by online communities and educational environments.
Authorities recovered a rifle near the shooting site, with bullet casings engraved with anti-fascist messages, such as “Hey, fascist! Catch!” and other taunting phrases incorporating meme culture. These engravings are being examined as indicators of a political motive.

Additionally, Discord messages from a contact named “Tyler” (linked to Robinson) discussed retrieving the rifle from a drop point, wrapping it in a towel, and using a scope —suggesting premeditation.

BBC Verify analysed Robinson’s social media accounts, revealing recent engagement with extreme left-wing content.
Reports indicate involvement in Antifa-related Discord servers and left-leaning online communities, where he expressed hatred toward figures like Kirk, whom he viewed as spreading “hatred” through conservative rhetoric.
Authorities have emphasised that while the evidence suggests a political dimension —specifically anti-fascist and anti-conservative sentiment — the full motive is not yet confirmed, and the investigation continues to explore personal, ideological and external factors.
Conservative voices have framed it as part of escalating left-wing violence, while others urge caution against speculation. No links to organized groups like Antifa have been officially confirmed, despite online rumors.
Robinson, a third-year student in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College and a licensed apprentice electrician since 2022, had no prior criminal record based on public records.
He grew up in a conservative, pro-gun Republican family in a Republican-leaning state and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from a young age, though his recent activity in the church is unclear.
Classmates described him as “quiet,” “goofy,” and “shy,” with no history of concerning statements. He was registered to vote but had never cast a ballot in any election.
Robinson is currently held without bail in Utah County Jail on charges including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice.
He is scheduled for a first court appearance on September 16, 2025, following formal charging by the Utah County Attorney’s Office.
