An academy in East London celebrated a new milestone as it helped more than half its students achieve all A’s in their A-level results.

Over 250 students at Brampton Manor Academy in Newham, East London, have achieved a full set of A* or A grades.

This was the best set of results the school has ever produced, as they went on to send dozens of prospective students to universities like Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, and the University College London.

These results surpassed some of the country’s most prestigious private and independent schools, such as Eton, despite being in one of London’s most deprived boroughs.

A large percentage of the top scorers at Brampton Academy are from ethnic minority backgrounds, receive free school meals, or will be the first in their families to attend university.

The Department for Education named Brampton Manor Academy’s sixth form as the top-performing post-16 provider in the region, and the fourth best performing state school in the country.

On Brampton Manor Academy’s official website, they said: “This success is the result of the hard work and ambition of our students and the dedication and expertise of their teachers. Whilst we are exceptionally proud of what our students have achieved in the past, we are even more excited by what our current students will go on to achieve in the future”

The ‘north-south’ divide reveals itself once again

In line with previous years, students in London achieved the best A-level results in the country, with almost a third being awarded top grades.

After the results came out, statistics revealed that 32.1% of students who sat their A-levels in London achieved A*-A grades.

Brampton Manor Academy surpassed this as they had over 50% of their students achieve the highest grades.

This has once again called into question the discrepancies in results between students in the north of England and major cities in the south.

Jill Duffy, chairwoman of JCQ board of directors and chief executive of the OCR exam board, said: “Regional inequalities are getting worse, not better. London is once again the top performing region and is now 9.2 percentage points ahead of the North East.”

Last year, Brampton Academy had 150 of its students achieve straight A* grades, whilst 349 others received either an A* or A in all their subjects.

The Newham school has made a name for itself in recent years for sending more students to Oxbridge than Eton College, with the latter having fees of nearly £65,000 a year.

Despite the limited resources, Brampton Academy competes with the country’s most prestigious schools.
