Deputy editor of 5Pillars, Dilly Hussain, responds to a smear campaign launched by the supporters of the deposed Sheikh Hasina regime accusing him of being the “UK leader” of the banned Islamic political party Hizb ut-Tahrir.
Allah (swt) says in the Quran: “O believers, if an evildoer brings you any news, verify it so you do not harm people unknowingly, becoming regretful for what you have done.” [49:6]
I have reluctantly decided to respond to a smear campaign led by the supporters of the deposed prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and her political party’s student wing the ‘Bangladesh Chhatra League’ (BCL) claiming that I am the “UK leader” of the banned Islamic political party Hizb ut-Tahrir.
First and foremost, I would like to clarify that I have never been a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, let alone its “UK leader”, and the burden of proof to substantiate this lie falls on the accusers, so please, bring forth your evidence.
Secondly, it is laughable that these lies are being spread by an actual banned terrorist organisation like the BCL, which for many years has wreaked havoc and misery upon tens of thousands of Bangladeshi students and ordinary citizens, their crimes ranging from murder, torture, kidnapping, extortion, rape, sexual assault and violent intimidation on university campuses.
Lastly, my trip to my ancestral motherland last October in the aftermath of the downfall of the Hasina regime was a very profound and proud moment for me. For the first time in my adult life, I was able to operate freely as a journalist, filming documentaries, carrying out interviews and podcasts, as well as briefly meeting some of the brave student coordinators and other political stakeholders. I am thankful to each and every person who gave me their precious time on and off camera.
To conclude, I have been a qualified journalist and a member of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) since 2013. I have featured on various mainstream media outlets (BBC, Sky, CNN, Channel 4) and written articles for reputable international publications (The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Middle East Eye, Foreign Policy Journal), as well as lecturing as a guest speaker at numerous prestigious UK universities (Oxford, UCL, KCL, LSE, Imperial).

It is no secret that I unapologetically identify as a practicing Muslim and that the media outlet I co-founded and currently the deputy editor of, 5Pillars, is a publication which exclusively focuses on current affairs related to Islam and Muslims.
I humbly remind the good people of Bangladesh that during such a critical juncture in this country’s history, it is the criminal elements and loyalists of the former regime who need to be held to account and brought to justice for the crimes they committed, facilitated and whitewashed for many years.

আওয়ামীলীগ ও নিষিদ্ধ সন্ত্রাসী গ্রুপ ছাত্রলীগের অনুগতদের মিথ্যাচারের জবাব-
পবিত্র কুরআনে আল্লাহ সুবহানাহু ওয়া তা’আলা বলেছেন:
‘হে মুমিনগণ! যদি কোনো পাপাচারী ব্যক্তি তোমাদের কাছে কোনো সংবাদ নিয়ে আসে, তবে তোমরা তা যাচাই করে নাও। অন্যথায় অজ্ঞতাবশত তোমরা কোনো সম্প্রদায়ের ক্ষতি করে ফেলবে, পরে নিজেদের কাজের জন্য অনুতপ্ত হবে।'(সূরা আল-হুজুরাত: ৬)
বাংলাদেশের পদচ্যুত প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা ও তার রাজনৈতিক দলের ছাত্রসংগঠন ‘বাংলাদেশ ছাত্রলীগ’ (বিসিএল)-এর সমর্থকদের একটি অপপ্রচারের জবাব দিতে আমি অনিচ্ছাসত্ত্বেও বাধ্য হয়েছি। তারা দাবি করছে যে আমি নিষিদ্ধ ইসলামিক রাজনৈতিক দল হিযবুত তাহরীরের ‘যুক্তরাজ্যের নেতা’।
প্রথমত, আমি স্পষ্ট করছি যে আমি কখনো হিযবুত তাহরীরের সদস্য ছিলাম না, ‘যুক্তরাজ্যের নেতা’ তো দূরের কথা। এই মিথ্যা দাবি প্রমাণের সম্পূর্ণ দায়িত্ব অভিযোগকারীদের উপর বর্তায়, সুতরাং দয়া করে তোমাদের প্রমাণ উপস্থাপন কর।
দ্বিতীয়ত, বিসিএলের মতো একটি নিষিদ্ধ সন্ত্রাসী সংগঠনের পক্ষ থেকে এই মিথ্যাচার ছড়ানো হাস্যকর। এই সংগঠন বহু বছর ধরে বাংলাদেশের লক্ষাধিক শিক্ষার্থী ও সাধারণ মানুষের উপর নজিরবিহীন ধ্বংস ও দুর্ভোগ সৃষ্টি করেছে; তাদের অপরাধের তালিকায় রয়েছে হত্যা, নির্যাতন, অপহরণ, চাঁদাবাজি, ধর্ষণ, যৌন নির্যাতন এবং বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ক্যাম্পাসে হিংসাত্মক ভীতি প্রদর্শন।”
অবশেষে, গত অক্টোবরে স্বৈরশাসক শেখ হাসিনার সরকারের পতনের পর আমার পৈতৃক মাতৃভূমিতে সফরটি আমার জন্য অত্যন্ত গভীর ও গর্বের মুহূর্ত ছিল। প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক জীবনে এই প্রথমবার আমি একজন সাংবাদিক হিসেবে স্বাধীনভাবে কাজ করার সুযোগ পেয়েছি—ডকুমেন্টারি নির্মাণ, সাক্ষাৎকার ও পডকাস্ট পরিচালনা, এবং সাহসী ছাত্র সংগঠক ও রাজনৈতিক স্টেকহোল্ডারদের সাথে সাক্ষাৎ করেছি। ক্যামেরার সামনে ও বাইরে যারা তাদের মূল্যবান সময় দিয়েছেন, আমি তাদের প্রত্যেকের কাছে কৃতজ্ঞ।
পরিশেষে, আমি ২০১৩ সাল থেকে একজন যোগ্যতাসম্পন্ন সাংবাদিক এবং ন্যাশনাল ইউনিয়ন অব জার্নালিস্টস (NUJ)-এর সদস্য। আমি বিবিসি, স্কাই, সিএনএন, চ্যানেল ৪-সহ বিভিন্ন প্রধান গণমাধ্যমে উপস্থিত হয়েছি এবং দ্য গার্ডিয়ান, আল জাজিরা, মিডল ইস্ট আই, ফরেন পলিসি জার্নালের মতো আন্তর্জাতিক প্রকাশনায় নিবন্ধ লিখেছি। ২০১৫ সাল থেকে অক্সফোর্ড, এলএসই, কেএসিএল, ইউসিএল-এর মতো যুক্তরাজ্যের স্বনামধন্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে সাংবাদিকতা ও মিডিয়া প্রশিক্ষণ দিয়ে আসছি।
এ কথা গোপন নয় যে, আমি নির্দ্বিধায় নিজেকে একজন মুসলিম হিসাবে পরিচয় দিই এবং আমি যে মিডিয়া আউটলেটটির সহ-প্রতিষ্ঠাতা এবং বর্তমানে যার ডেপুটি এডিটর—৫ পিলার্স নামক এই গণমাধ্যমটি ইসলাম ও মুসলিমদের সাথে সংশ্লিষ্ট সাম্প্রতিক ঘটনাবলীর ওপর একান্তভাবে মনোনিবেশ করে।
বাংলাদেশের সচেতন নাগরিকদের আমি স্মরণ করিয়ে দিতে চাই, দেশের ইতিহাসের এই সংকটময় মুহূর্তে সাবেক শাসনামলের অপরাধী চক্র এবং তাদের অনুগতদের জবাবদিহির মুখোমুখি করতে হবে। বছরের পর বছর তারা যে অপরাধ ও কৃতকর্ম করেছে এবং বিভিন্নভাবে তা ধামাচাপা দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করেছে তার ন্যায়বিচারও নিশ্চিত করতে হবে।
