Mehdi Hasan: “British Muslims cannot afford to become pawns of Saudi and Iran”

Journalist Mehdi Hasan speaking at the Muslim Council of Britain’s (MCB) unity iftar where both Sunnis and Shias gathered to break their fast.

Scholars, academics and professionals from both groups came together last week at the intra-unity iftar event in London organised by the MCB.

In his speech, Mehdi Hasan explains how Sunnis and Shias have more in common than legitimate theological and historical differences.

He goes on to state that the problem between Sunnis and Shias is “political” and related to the geopolitics of the Middle East, specifically between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

He concludes by highlighting that British Muslims cannot selectively protest oppression in the Muslim world based on sectarian affiliation, rather as Muslims from the perspective of humanity.
