The janazah of Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Iran by Israel earlier this week, has taken place in Doha, Qatar, as commemorations were held in countries including Turkey, Lebanon, Yemen, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Thousands of mourners gathered on Friday at Doha’s Imam Muhammad ibn Abdul al-Wahhab Mosque to join prayers before the Hamas political chief was buried in Lusail, north of the Qatari capital.
The atmosphere was one of grief and solidarity for Palestinians in Gaza.
In Gaza itself, Hamas called for a “day of furious rage” to protest against the assassination. Prayers in-absentia were also held in occupied East Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, several countries held funeral processions for Ismail Haniyeh, including various cities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and in Lebanon.
Separately, several protest marches were held in cities across Jordan in protest of Haniyeh’s killing.

The Pakistani parliament also held a funeral prayer in-absentia.
In Mauritania, thousands performed the absentia prayer for Haniyeh in several mosques in the capital, Nouakchott, and other cities across the country.
Moroccans also performed the absentia prayer in mosques across the northern African kingdom, including those in Casablanca, Oujda, and Nador.
Haniyeh was assassinated on Wednesday in the Iranian capital, Tehran. While Hamas and Iran blamed Israel for the killing, Tel Aviv has not confirmed or denied its responsibility.
The assassination came a day after Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut’s southern suburb.
The escalation came against the backdrop of a deadly Israeli onslaught on Gaza which has killed nearly 39,500 people since last October following an attack by Hamas.
