Former boxing champion Anthony Small charged with terrorism offence

Former Muslim British boxing champion, Anthony Small, from south-east London, has been charged with encouraging terrorism, police have said.

Small, 36, is accused of a terrorism offence after he published a video on social media in September 2016.

He is a former British and Commonwealth light middleweight champion, but quit the sport in 2010.

The Muslim convert commonly known as “Abdul Haq” is due to appear in custody at Westminster magistrates’ court on Wednesday.

A Scotland Yard statement said: “A 36-year-old man from south-east London is to appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday January 24 charged with a terrorism offence.

“Anthony Small was charged with encouraging acts of terrorism under section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006 in connection with a video posted on social media in September 2016.”

“It follows an investigation by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command.

Small converted to Islam aged 24, and has an active YouTube channel where he advocates for Sharia law to be implemented in Britain.

In 2016, he appeared in the BBC Two documentary Muslims Like Us.
