Brennan Mongan, who is accused of driving a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run attack that left a Muslim woman injured in London in March, has appeared in court from prison via video link.

Mongan, 31, of Sewell Road, Abbey Wood, appeared via video link at Woolwich Crown Court in the first hearing since his arrest.

Following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police, Mongan was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, criminal damage to a motor vehicle, and other driving offences.

It remains unclear what the alleged motive was behind the incident and Mongan has yet to issue a formal plea in relation to any of the charges.

Speaking in a brief hearing at Woolwich Crown Court today, Mongan explained how due to an administrative error he had been unable to secure any legal representation forcing the judge to adjourn until June 18.

On March 8, police were called by the London Ambulance Service following a report that a woman had been hit by a car and that the driver had fled the scene on Harrow Manorway, Abbey Wood, South East London.

A manhunt was launched for the driver, with footage showing a car ploughing into a visibly Muslim woman at speed before driving off in what was feared to be a targeted attack.

The woman, aged in her 20s, was sent “flying” across the street and over the car bonnet. Following the hit-and-run, the victim was rushed to hospital, where her condition was not deemed to be life-threatening or life-changing. She has since been discharged and continues to be supported by police.

The Met later confirmed the identity of the alleged driver as Mongan, after he was arrested in Scotland on March 25 in connection with the incident.

He was remanded in custody and appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on March 28.
