
Six men have been jailed for their role in the killing of 39 year old Shamus Hussain in a park in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, last year.
Hussain was killed in Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury Moor, on July 12 last year following an argument.
Four men were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and two others were given seven years for manslaughter.
The court heard that a verbal argument took place between Shamus, Basit Ali, Sakeb Ali Khan, Zeeshan Khan and another man on Pilgrim Drive.
This resulted in a group of men following Shamus into Crow Nest Park where they attacked him with baseball bats and hockey sticks. He was also stabbed in the back twice causing fatal injuries.
Appearing before Leeds Crown Court for sentencing today:
- Saqlain Ali, aged 22, from Dewsbury, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years, 56 days.
- Basit Ali, aged 32, from Dewsbury, was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to life with a minimum of 15 years, 56 days.
- Sakeb Ali Khan, aged 33, from Dewsbury, was found guilty of murder, and was sentenced to life with a minimum of 15 years, 56 days.
- Zeeshan Khan, aged 19, from Dewsbury, was found guilty of murder, and was sentenced to life with a minimum of ten years and 64 days.
- Asim Akram, aged 21, from Dewsbury, was found guilty of manslaughter, and was sentenced to seven years.
- Faizaan Akram, aged 19, from Dewsbury was found guilty of manslaughter, and was sentenced to seven years.

Speaking after today’s sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle, senior investigating officer, said: “Last summer, Shamus Hussain was assaulted in a Dewsbury park in broad daylight. The attack was both violent and entirely senseless, leaving him with injuries from which he tragically died.

“Our thoughts remain with Shamus’ loved ones who had to endure a lengthy trial before seeing his killers’ brought to justice. Nothing can undo the loss they have suffered, but I hope today’s sentences will bring them some comfort.
“Our investigation team worked tirelessly to piece together the events that led up to Shamus’s death, trawling through hours of CCTV footage and witness accounts. Through a careful and comprehensive inquiry, we were able to secure the evidence needed to bring those responsible for Shamus’s death to justice.”
Paying tribute to 39-year-old Shamus, from Dewsbury Moor, his family said: “As a family we have been left heartbroken by the death of Shamus. He was a much-loved son, father and brother, whose kindness, warmth and presence meant so much to those around him.
“His family, friends and all who knew him will feel his loss deeply and he is missed every day.”
