Death toll rises to 10 as Indonesia landslide leaves scores missing

The death toll from a devastating landslide in Indonesia has climbed to 10, as desperate search and rescue efforts continue for more than 80 people still missing in West Java, state-run media report.

The landslide struck a village in West Bandung regency on Saturday, with dozens of homes reportedly buried under mud and debris; there are 81 victims missing, the Antara news agency reported

The military said there were reports that 23 soldiers were also among those missing, adding that the information was still being verified.

Search and rescue teams are continuing brave efforts in the affected area, which is marked by difficult terrain, while weather forecasts warn of moderate to very heavy rainfall in the coming days, complicating operations.

Authorities in Central Java have extended an emergency response status due to ongoing floods and landslides. The second phase of the emergency period will run from January 24 to February 6, to ensure continued response and recovery efforts.

This latest deadly disaster comes just days after another shocking incident left a number of Indonesians dead.

An Indonesian plane crashed in the Mount Bulusaraung area of South Sulawesi province on January 17, according to local media search and rescue teams have managed to recover all 10 of the missing people involved in the crash, with the 10th and final victim recovered on Friday. The ATR 42-500 aircraft, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, lost contact on Saturday in the Marosdy was recovered on Friday morning, according to Detik News.

So far, only two victims have been identified: cabin crew member Florencia Lolita and Deden Maulana, an official with the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, for which the aircraft was conducting patrols, according to the state-run news agency Antara.

The ATR 42-500 aircraft, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, lost contact on Saturday in the Maros district while en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi.

Debris from the plane was found on Sunday. The aircraft was carrying 10 people, including seven crew members and three passengers.

The plane’s black box was recovered from the crash site by the joint search and rescue team.
