A volunteer at the mosque, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Argus newspaper that the community has noticed tensions rising.
“There has been a rise in racism around here recently. It’s a quiet area, there’s only a few Muslim people here. Everyone here is affected, it’s a small community of Muslims. Our neighbours, who are not Muslims, came out crying. We have good relations with everybody who lives around. Everyone is obviously scared, we don’t know what’s going to happen. Obviously, there are flags around everywhere. They don’t bother us, this is England and there should be flags around.”
The Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, Councillor Bella Sankey has issued a statement following the attack at Peacehaven Mosque.
Councillor Sankey, said: “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the deliberate fire set at Peacehaven Mosque last night. This appalling act of violence is being investigated as a hate crime, and we are working closely with Lewes District Council, East Sussex County Council, Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service to support their efforts and ensure the safety of our communities.
“Islamophobia and racist violence have no place in our region. We stand in solidarity with our Muslim neighbours and reaffirm our commitment to protecting all places of worship and fostering a community built on respect, inclusion, and peace.
“We will not tolerate any form of hate, prejudice, or targeting of any of our communities. We understand how interconnected our communities are across the region and are working with our local Muslim communities appropriately.
“We urge anyone with information, footage, or eyewitness accounts to come forward and assist the investigation. Hate must be met with unity, and we will continue to work with local leaders, faith groups, and residents to ensure that every part of our county remains a safe and welcoming place for all.”
“Our thoughts are with the mosque leadership and Muslim community during this distressing time.”
Anyone with information about the arson can report it to Sussex Police online or on 101, quoting Operation Spey.
