Senior British imams condemn Orlando massacre

East London Mosque

A group of imams from some of Britain’s biggest mosques have signed a statement condemning the Orlando massacre.

The statement, which was organised by The Joseph Interfaith Foundation (a Muslim-Jewish interfaith group), was signed by the imams of London Central Mosque, East London Mosque, Leicester Central Mosque, Birmingham Central Mosque and Leeds Central Mosque, as well as by the Armed Forces imam, among others.

It reads: “We the senior Imams of the Muslim community, write also on behalf of thousands of our congregants to utterly and unreservedly condemn this barbaric, inhuman and un-Islamic carnage in Orlando.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victims. In our opinion that sinful attack of religious hatred and terror is completely against the teachings of Islam.

“Indeed the Holy Quran teaches us all: ‘Whoever kills a person unjustly … it is as though he has killed all mankind. And whoever saves a life, it is as though he had saved all mankind.’ (Quran, 5:32)

“We re-iterate our commitment to continuously combat all hate crimes and prejudices, particularly religious hatred. May God direct us all to the right path.
