Police say Finsbury Park Mosque arson attempt will be treated as hate crime

Finsbury Park Mosque

An attempted arson attack at Finsbury Park Mosque in London is being treated as a hate crime, say police.

A man was spotted attempting to set fire to the mosque at about 10:17am yesterday, before fleeing the scene on a moped.

Scotland Yard said they received reports of a man acting suspiciously before targeting the building in St Thomas’ Road.

The suspect – described as a white and wearing a hooded top – was also seen outside the mosque on Friday night.

“At this early stage police are treating the incident as a hate crime,” a Met Police spokesman said.

An appeal for witnesses has been made.
