Islamic scholar Dr Yasir Qadhi outlines the attitude that US Muslims should adopt to homosexuality in the light of the legalisation of same-sex marriages across the entirety of the United States.
He says that believing, practising Muslims will always oppose homosexuality on moral grounds and that will never change because it is clear-cut in the Quran and in the Prophetic example.
That said, he says US Muslims live in a secular country where homosexuality is accepted and they must respect the law of the land. They should also never direct hatred towards homosexual people because ultimately from a Muslim perspective it is a sin and we are all sinners in one way or another.
In addition, the fact is that many homosexuals are also extremely sympathetic to the plight of the Muslim community and are at the forefront of exposing the injustices perpetrated against them.
That said, US Muslims must object when pressure is put on them to change their ethical and moral values and they must ally with Jews and Christians who share their understanding of marital relations to ensure that they are not discriminated against or ostracised if they stick to their religious principles (as surely they must).
