The Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Malaysia, Ibrahim Sahib Ansar, has been beaten up by a group of Tamil Tiger supporters at Kuala Lumpur airport after he refused to divulge the whereabouts of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is on a visit to Malaysia.
According to reports, a group of Tamils had protested by burning effigies of Rajapaksa whom they consider a war criminal for his role in defeating the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka’s long-running civil war.
Colombo confirmed reports that its High Commissioner to Malaysia had been assaulted by a group at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on 4th of September 2016.
“The Government of Sri Lanka condemns this act of violence on Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Malaysia, in the strongest terms. The High Commissioner is receiving medical attention,” a statement said.
The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur is coordinating with local law enforcement authorities in Malaysia and other relevant local authorities to identify perpetrators and assist with investigations, the statement added.
