Violent clashes erupted at Altab Ali Park in East London between rival groups after Bangladeshi Martyrs Day.

Metal barricades were used as improvised weapons in Altab Ali Park when Bangladeshi politics spilled over onto the streets of the East London.

Police broke up the fighting and cleared everyone from the park, but no arrests were made.

Hundreds had gathered in the park at midnight to place flowers at the Shaheed Minar (Martyr Monument) for the annual Bangladeshi Martyrs Day ceremony.

But it turned violent after a heated exchange of words between rival factions over the controversial war crimes trials of Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders in Bangladesh.

Tensions has been building up in the borough of Tower Hamlets over the International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh, which is illegally trying men accused of war crimes during the country’s 1971 liberation war against Pakistan.

Death threats have been received by activists in London and some have been attacked in the street.
