Muslim Brotherhood supporters have been carrying out peaceful sit-in protests in Rabaa al-Adawiya since the ousting of Mohammed Morsi last month by the Egyptian military.
On Thursday 14 August, the Egyptian army, police, security forces and plain cloth thugs were responsible for the deaths of hundreds or thousands (differing media reports on the death toll) of Ikhwani supporters when they carried out raids to clear the area. Live rounds were fired at protestors and tents where people slept were torched.
