Ahmad Tibi, a Palestinian member of the Israeli parliament or Knesset, has performed the Maghrib adhan inside parliament in protest at a new bill that forces mosques to lower the volume of the call to prayer.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel is “committed to defending those who suffer from the loudness of the excessive noise of the announcements.”
The bill, however, was denounced by Sheikh Ekrema Sabri, head of the Supreme Muslim Council in Jerusalem.
“The Adhaan is one of the most important aspects of the Islamic faith,” Sabri told Anadolu Agency. “Israel has no right to interfere in our religious affairs.”
