At least eight Shia Muslims were killed and 18 others were injured in an explosion during a Muharram gathering in Kabul.
According to local authorities, ISIS-K exploded a bomb at a house in the Sar-e-Karez neighborhood in Kabul over the weekend.
Women had gathered at the house to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (ra), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), which is being mourned by Shia Muslims around the world during the first 10 days of the Islamic calendar month of Muharram.
ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the bomb attack in Kabul via its social media accounts.
Zabihullah Mujahid, Islamic Emirate spokesman, said security forces killed four ISIS-K terrorists in Kabul’s Karte Sakhi neighborhood, while one was apprehended. Security officers also seized some ammunition and firearms, he added.
He stated that terrorists planned to target the Shia community during Muharram, but that the plot was thwarted by security forces.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s acting third deputy prime minister, Mawlavi Mohammad Abdul Kabir, met with members of the Shia Ulema on Sunday to discuss the bombings in Kabul during Muharram.

Kabir “shared his grief with the families of the victims due to the martyrdom and wounding” of members of the community, a statement issued read.
Javad Salehi, the deputy head of the Shia Ulema Council, and Ustad Akbari, one of the Shia elders, attended the meeting and thanked the security forces for their attempts to maintain security leading up to Ashura.
