100 year old Londoner Dabir Choudhury is walking 100s of laps around his communal garden while fasting in an effort to raise money for charities, including those distributing aid in the UK, Bangladesh, Gaza, Syria and Yemen.
Dabir initially made a pledge to raise £1,000 last Sunday for the victims of COVID-19, but within nine hours his JustGiving page reached its target and since then donations haved poured in from across the country. The total now stands at over £100,000.
He now says he won’t stop walking as long as donors keep donating.
Dabir, who has been in isolation for over two months, is raising money for Channel S TV’s “RFC COVID19 Crisis” initiative.
Born in 1920 in Sylhet, Bangladesh, Dabir moved to England in 1957 to study English Literature in London. Due to his command of the English language, he ended up as a community leader and settled in St. Albans where he was responsible for many community projects and raising money for the Bangladesh independence struggle.
He is an accomplished poet and has published over a thousand of his own poems. In his spare time he goes to local book clubs and poetry associations.
Dabir said: “Thank you for your donations. I’m not fighting alone to put a smile on the faces of hungry children, we are fighting together. This money will help families who are in desperate need in the UK, Bangladesh and many other countries.”
