An Egyptian journalist has sparked controversy on social media after he called on Liverpool FC’s star player, Mohamed Salah, to shave his beard because it makes the footballer look like a “terrorist”.
The article which was published on Sunday 11 March by the state-run newspaper Al-Ahram, Salah Montaser wrote that the Liverpool forward should shave his beard as it “puts him in one basket with extremists and terrorists”.
Football fans across the board slammed the article on social media, arguing that facial hair is a personal choice and that people should not be judged on their physical appearance.
Mohamed Salah is currently the Premier League’s joint-top scorer along with Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, with 24 goals under their belt.
He is a massive public figure in his native country of Egypt.
Salah’s celebrity status was further consolidated last October when he scored the goal that secured Egypt’s World Cup qualification for the first time since 1990.
