A Muslim security guard from Newcastle has been praised by his company for helping save a stranger’s life who tried to jump from Tyne Bridge.
Zaheer Mohammed has received an award for his brave action.
Cordant Security presented Zaheer with the award following the incident.
Zaheer told The Chronicle: “Obviously saving a man’s life is quite a big thing.
“I was chosen for the award from employees from all across the UK. I’m really pleased with that.”
Zaheer, from Fenham, Newcastle, had taken a trip to the Quayside earlier this year to get an ice-cream on his day off when he noticed the man standing precariously on the wrong side of the safety railings on the Tyne Bridge.
After realising no-one else was trying to save the troubled person, Zaheer raced to his aid and grabbed him as emergency services and passers-by watched on.

He said: “I was just walking past the Tyne Bridge when I saw him.
“He was on the other side of the railings and he looked like he was going to jump. Lots of passers-by were just watching and the police were there. I just thought, ‘I’m going to have to help this guy’. He looked like he was really serious.”
Northumbria Police’s Newcastle city centre Neighbourhood Inspector Darren Adams has also praised Zaheer.
He said: “We thank Mr Mohammed for his public-spirited actions in helping a man who was in danger, having climbed on to the wrong side of the railings on the Tyne Bridge.
“As a result of his timely actions on the day he undoubtedly helped keep the man safe, and assisted officers who attended the incident, for that we thank him.”
