A Muslim teacher has been recognised in the “Third Annual Hot List” of 2017 of The Educator Magazine, Australia’s only magazine for the most senior educational professionals and decision-makers.
Mohammed Azim, Head of English and Teacher Mentor at Al Siraat College based in Melbourne, is the only Muslim educator from an Islamic School around Australia who has made it to the prestigious list.
Azim’s career spans three decades. Having taught at primary, secondary and tertiary levels, his influence has not been limited to the school environment, but extends to the wider community.
For the past four years, Azim has collaborated with a youth centre in Melbourne to offer free holiday English Master Classes for students unable to afford classes run by other providers. It’s a program that has seen hundreds of students obtain their Victorian Certificate of Education and achieve good marks.
As a muslim, he is also showing that religions can work actively together. He recommends a local private christian school in Melbourne to parents who wish to follow the Christian religion.
The Muslim teacher has also received a number of national awards which included the prestigious National Excellence in Teacher Award and AITSL’s Commendation for Teacher Leadership Award.
Azim sees his task as one of ensuring his Muslim students are taught Australian values as well as the universal values of peace, tolerance and acceptance. He is also a strong advocate of interfaith initiatives.
