Around 200 people gathered outside Edinburgh Central Mosque on Tuesday evening in solidarity with the city’s Muslim community.
In the early hours of Sunday a flaming object was thrown at the mosque causing minor damage to the front door and garden. No one was injured in the attack.
The vigil was organized by Unite Against Fascism Scotland. Speakers included local politicians and members of the Muslim Women’s Association of Edinburgh.
Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident as a hate crime and are appealing for witnesses to get in touch by calling 101.
It is not the first time Edinburgh Central Mosque has been targeted. In 2013 member of the Scottish Defence League Chelsea Lambie and her accomplices Douglas Cruickshank and Wayne Stilwel attached bacon to the mosque’s door handles and threw bacon strips inside. They were jailed for 12, nine and 10 months respectively.
