King Salman of Saudi Arabia has approved designs for the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid al Nabawi) expansion project in Madinah.
The plans includes the expansion of the mosque, the Darb Al-Sunnah project (a 3km stretch between the Prophet’s Mosque and Quba Mosque) and the rebuilding of Quba Mosque.
According to the revised plan, the first phase of development will be undertaken on the eastern side of the Prophet’s Mosque, followed by development on the western side during the second phase.
The Prophet’s Mosque was the second mosque built in the history of Islam and is now one of the largest mosques in the world. It is the second-holiest site in Islam, after Masjid al-Haram in Makkah.
It incorporates the final resting place of Muhammad (saw) and the first two Rashidun caliphs Abu Bakr (ra) and Umar (ra).
One of the most notable features of the site is the Green Dome in the south-east corner of the mosque, originally Aisha’s (ra) house, where the tomb of Prophet Muhammad (saw) is located.
