Amid calls from right-wing forces to ban halal slaughter in the UK, Robert Carter visits a halal abattoir to observe the Islamic method of slaughtering sheep and to ask experts whether the practice is truly more inhumane to animals compared to non-Muslim alternatives.
Right-wing politician Rupert Lowe sparked a social media row on the subject when he posted on X a call to outlaw the industry.
“As a farmer, I have deep concerns about the impact of halal slaughter on animal welfare – it is unnecessarily cruel. I asked Govt to commission a study on the subject – the answer was due on Jan 16th. I have heard nothing. My opinion is that Halal slaughter should be banned.”
A media row was similarly sparked when a Five Guys branch in Birmingham declared it was going halal due to customer demand.
Industry experts have rubbished the accusations of the practice being inhumane and have warned against the growing rot of Islamophobia in Europe.
