Suspected right-wing terror related arrest outside Scottish mosque

A white teenager has been arrested outside a Scottish Islamic centre for terror-related offences, with reports suggesting possible links to right-wing extremism.

Police have confirmed a 16-year-old boy was arrested shortly after 09:00 outside the Inverclyde Islamic Centre on Laird Street, Greenock, in connection with offences under the Terrorism Act.

According to reports, the police are investigating whether these alleged offences were connected to right-wing extremism.

Assistant Chief Constable Andy Freeburn said there was nothing to suggest there was any further risk to the public.

“During the course of the investigation, a second 16-year-old male youth was arrested this afternoon in the Greenock area in connection with a separate terrorism offence. He has been released without charge pending further inquiries.”

However, a second 16-year-old boy was then arrested later in the afternoon.

Inverclyde and Renfrewshire West MP Martin McCluskey has also reportedly commented on the matter, revealing that the teen arrested outside the Islamic Centre is a white Scottish male.

“This morning, Police arrested a sixteen-year-old boy in Greenock under the Terrorism Act. I have been briefed by local Police Scotland officers and will remain in contact with them.

As people will have seen from media reports, the boy is understood to be a white Scottish male and the police have said that there is no indication that anyone else was involved or that there is any further risk to the public.”

The police have urged anyone with information or concerns to speak to officers as inquiries continue.

The management clarified that while the investigation remains ongoing they do not intend to speak publicly about the matter.
