Our charity partners, One Ummah, are on the ground in Morocco where a 6.8 magnitude earthquake has caused destruction and widespread displacement, and the death toll is expected to rise dramatically.

A devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco on Friday, September 8, 2023, claiming over 2,800 lives and displacing hundreds of thousands more. The powerful quake struck in the High Atlas Mountains, about 45 miles southwest of Marrakech. The epicentre was located in a seismically active region. Earthquakes are a regular occurrence in Morocco, but this earthquake is different.

It is the strongest to hit the country in over a century; entire villages have been wiped out, and many people are still missing. The earthquake has decimated an estimated 500,000 homes and businesses. Many roads and bridges have been damaged or collapsed, making it difficult to reach affected areas.

The Prophet Muhammad S.A.W said:

“Whosoever removes a worldly grief from a believer, Allah will remove from him one of the griefs of the Day of Judgment.”

The earthquake has had a devastating impact on the people of Morocco. More than 100,000 people have been displaced from their homes. Children have been orphaned and elderly people have been left without care.

The destruction of mosques in Morocco has had a significant impact on the Muslim community. Many mosques and religious schools have been destroyed. This has been a major, leaving a gaping hole in the community. Overall, the earthquake is estimated to have caused a staggering $1 billion in damage.
