Police have launched an investigation after vandals sprayed Islamophobic graffiti and smashed the windows of a mosque in Sunderland.

Northumbria Police are treating that attack on Anware Madina Mosque in the Millfield area as a hate crime.

Numerous “offensive” words were sprayed onto a door last Monday, reports said.

Police said they have since been removed.

The police have also appealed for witnesses as part of their ongoing investigation.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “We want to reassure the community that hate crime will not be tolerated, and we would encourage anyone with information to contact us.”
