Egypt’s Salafi Al-Nour Party back El-Sisi’s presidential re-election

Head of the Al-Nour party, Younes Makhyoun.

Egypt’s Salafi Al-Nour party have declared their support for President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in his bid for a second term in office.

Younes Makhyoun, the head of the Al-Nour, stated in a news conference in Cairo last Sunday that, “The current president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is the most capable to carry out the heavy responsibilities of bringing cooperation between all the state’s institutions including the armed forces, police, and parliament.”

He added that unity “would achieve stability, and steer the country away from many dangers.”

Makhyoun urged Al-Nour’s members and followers to exercise their right to vote for el-Sisi in the presidential election next month.

Another Nour leader, Ahmed Al-Argawy, told Quds Press that the party instructed its parliamentarians across Egypt’s provinces to mobilise their communities to take part in the election.

Al-Nour Party has emerged as one of the staunchest supporters of el-Sisi, who led the military coup which toppled Egypt’s first democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

El-Sisi said on state TV last week that he “fight” for the presidential contest all alone, after his military regime removed all the other candidates via threats, intimidation and arrest.

The presidential one-man race will be held from March 26 to 28 in which el-Sisi is obviously expected to win a “landslide” victory.

However, the current president has promised “free and transparent” elections “characterised by equal opportunities between candidates.”
