Oldest recording of Quran recitation from Ottoman period Makkah

The oldest recording of Quran recitation from Makkah 132 years ago with unique footage of the holy city.

The recording was done during the Ottoman Caliphate in 1885 in Makkah.

Dutch journalist Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje compiled his rare photographs and sound recordings of Makkah 132 years ago.

Snouck’s fascinating collection of sepia-tinted images of Makkah went on display in Dubai in 2010.

Accompanied by soundscapes captured by Snouck using Thomas Edison’s newly-invented wax cylinders, the exhibition paints a very different picture from today’s holy city surrounded by skyscrapers and shopping malls.
