The fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Zeshan Afzal in Smethwick has developed into one of the largest youth murder investigations in the West Midlands, with nine teenagers now charged in connection with his death.
Two teenagers, aged 14 and 17, were charged with murder at Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court today, bringing the total number of youths charged over Zeshan’s death to nine.
Due to their ages, none of the defendants can be named for legal reasons.
Zeshan, from Smethwick, died after being attacked on February 20. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 9pm, where he was found with serious stab wounds. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead soon afterwards.
The incident occured outside the Jamia Masjid mosque during Ramadan. Two other men, aged 19 and 22, were also injured but survived.
Police have described the incident as involving “disorder” between a number of individuals, suggesting a group confrontation. However, the exact circumstances leading up to the stabbing, including any motive, have not yet been confirmed.
Earlier updates from investigators indicated that several suspects had been arrested in the weeks following the stabbing, with charges gradually increasing as evidence was gathered.

Some of those accused are believed to be as young as 13 or 14.
Zeshan’s family have paid tribute to him as a “beloved” son, remembering his kindness, generosity and sense of humour. His death has had a profound impact on the local community, particularly given the location and timing of the attack.
A fundraiser was set up in his memory during Ramadan and has collected over £10K.
It states: “This Ramadan, a month of mercy, forgiveness, and immense reward, we were tested in the most heartbreaking way. Our beloved brother was tragically taken from us during this sacred month — a time when the gates of Jannah are open and deeds are multiplied.
“He was a son, a brother, a friend, and a light in our lives. His kindness, generosity, and laughter touched everyone who knew him. To lose him during Ramadan has been an indescribable pain, but we hold onto the promise of Allah’s mercy and the hope that this blessed month is a sign of honour for him…
“We are raising funds in his name to serve as sadaqah jariyah — a source of continuous reward for him in his grave and a means of light for him in the Hereafter.
“Your donation, no matter how small, is an act of charity in this blessed month when rewards are multiplied. We ask you to give for the sake of Allah, to make du’a for him, and to help us turn our grief into ongoing good that benefits others.”
West Midlands Police say the investigation remains ongoing and continue to appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. Officers are particularly keen to review mobile phone or dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident.
Anyone who has not yet spoken to police is urged to call 101, quoting log number 4896 of February 20. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers.
