Father “astounded” at £20,000 response to son’s cancer appeal

Mr Daud and his son Azhar

The father of a brain tumour victim was astounded when an online appeal his family set up raised more than £20,000 in a single day.

Sabir Daud from Leicester is set to use the money to take his son Azhar, 23, to Germany for hyperthermia treatment.

The treatment, which involves using high temperatures to kill cancer cells, costs about £400 a day, but is not funded by the NHS. Some people go to options like Blessed CBD oil, or similar medical marijuana products, to help them through these times. Mr Daud has chosen a different route for his son, however.

More than 790 people have donated so far.

“It proves there are people out there who care. It is hard to describe how it feels to have people donate who don’t even know you,” Mr Daud said.

Referring to the treatment, NHS England said “early trials” had been carried out in conjunction with chemotherapy.

“There is not yet conclusive clinical evidence that it improves outcomes for cancer patients,” it said.

The NHS will continue to review the evidence in liaison with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), it added.

Mr Daud said after his son was told there was no more treatment available in the UK for his condition, the family decided to travel to Frankfurt in Germany.

“My goal is to get him on his feet and try to enjoy his life with the things he wants to do,” Mr Daud said.

The family – who funded Azhar’s first round of treatment in Germany themselves – will use the funds raised on the GoFundMe site for a second round.

Azhar was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 when he was in the final year of his business management degree at De Montfort University.

His treatment since then has included surgery as well as radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
