Scuffles break out at EDL East London march

Scuffles and disorder  have broken out in east London at an English Defence League (EDL) march.

Three thousand police are present and have  used batons, kettled protestors and made arrests as they hold apart an English Defence League march and thousands of anti-EDL protestors.

Protestors threw flares and used placards in attempts to break police lines in Tower Hamlets. But the officers policing the march have so far managed to contain the violence and keep the sides apart. The EDL march has already been shortened by the Metropolitan Police who feared it would cause “serious public disorder”.

A judge sanctioned the police order on Friday accepting the Met Police’s argument that the march’s route was “unnecessarily provocative”. The Tower Hamlets borough has the biggest Muslim population in the country

Both of the area’s MPs called for a ban on the march, calling it a “deplorable hate preaching tactic which we have seen result in serious violence multiple times before”.
